**Root Canal Therapy (Endodontics)**Root Canal therapy , or endodontics, is the process of removing the nerves from the roots of a tooth. A root canal is often necessary to save an infected tooth. If an infected tooth is left alone for a long period of time, an abscess can form. It is very important to catch this problem before it deteriorates too far. The decision to refer the root canal procedure to a specialist (Endodontist) will be dependent upon the difficulty, as well as the patient's specific needs.**Scaling and Root Planning**Gum disease is usually caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on teeth. If plaque is not removed with thorough daily brushing and cleaning between teeth, gums become irritated and inflamed. The irritated gum tissue can separate from the teeth and form spaces called pockets. Bacteria move into the pockets where they continue to promote irritation. Left untreated, the process can continue until bone and other tooth-suppo rting tissues are destroyed.
